When its gloomy and cloudy outside, no one, including are dogs want to go outside and play. Although, even on these rainy days it is important your dog is staying active. Some dogs love the rain but others will stick up their noses to it. Below are a few tips on walking your dog in the rain.
Safety: Seek out some type of shelter outside where you and your pup can hide from the rain. Trees, bushes, buildings and awnings are all good ways to shield yourself from the rain and wind. Try to stay away from roadways as much as possible. You wouldn’t want your pup to get splashed by a car when they drive through puddles.
Pay attention to your pup: You will be able to tell whether your dog likes the rain or not. Make sure you watch for signs that your dog is annoyed and wants to make this trip outside as quick as possible. They cold have anxiety and become alarmed when they hear thunder. Make sure you go directly inside if you hear any thunder or see lightning.
Invest in protective gear: Pet stores provide umbrellas that have dog leashes attached to them. It helps to keep you both dry. Doggie Raincoats come in all styles and sizes. Some of them are even waterproof and wind resistant. Dogs are more likely to get blisters on their paws from wet feet. There are a variety of doggie rain boots out there, if you think your dog could handle them. Most of them have adjustable ankle straps and non skid soles. Your pup will thank you for purchasing any of these items, especially if your dog doesn’t like the rain.
Clean up: Always have a towel ready by the front door for drying off. The first thing your wet dog will want to do is run all over the house.
