The sit command is one of the most basic and beneficial tricks your dog could learn. It makes it easier for you to stay in control and your four-legged friend will soon realize that sitting is the best way to make friends. People are more likely to come over and say hello to a dog that is properly trained. Follow these steps to easily train your pup to sit!
Stand up, hold a treat in your hands and keep it within one inch of your dogs nose. Guide him into the sit position by moving the treat to the top of his head just enough that he has to raise his nose straight up in the air and follow the treat. He will want to keep his eye on the treat so naturally, his rear will follow and move down to the floor. Right when your dogs rear hits the floor, command “Yes!” and praise him with a treat. Repeat this step over and over until your dog routinely follows the treat and sits down when you command.
Once your dog has this down, you can remove the treat from your trick. Raise your empty hand in front of your dogs nose, just like you did before but keep the treat in your pocket. Move your hand in the exact way and when your dog sits, say “yes!” and then hand him the treat that was hidden. This way your pup gets use to you not having a prize in your hands at all times.
